The New Perspective on Paul: A Brief Essay Toward the end of the twentieth century, a revolution in Pauline studies brought to the fore an understanding of Paul’s theology called the “New Perspective.” 1 This terminology assumes that there was an “old perspective” on Paul (though.On the contrary, I believe that the new perspective on Paul does make better sense of Paul than either Sanders or his critics have so far realized. And, if I may, I would like in what follows to make a beginning to an exegesis and description of Paul’s theology from this perspective. II.Scot McKnight and Joseph B. Modica have assembled this stellar one-stop guide exploring four major interpretive perspectives on the apostle Paul: Reformational, New, Apocalyptic, and Participationist. First elucidated by a scholarly essay, each perspective is then illuminated by three sermons expositing various passages from Paul’s.
The term “new perspective” was coined by J.D.G. Dunn in 1982 to describe the new approach to Paul’s theology he was advocating which was built on the work of several earlier scholars such as E.P. Sanders in Paul and Palestinian Judaism (1977). It now is embraced by quite a range of scholars.The new perspectives on Paul can be rather confusing for the general layperson, so it is the goal of this paper to clarify and explain these new positions in contrast to the prevalent and classically held orthodox view that contains many doctrines that the church has stood upon for years.
This so-called New Perspective on Paul (NPP) has had large success in certain (especially English speaking) scholarly circles, and has started to cross over into the Churc h, including evangelical.
